Michael Hunter And Matchroom Boxing Part Ways

American heavyweight Michael Hunter (18-1-1, 12 KO) is officially a free agent. The 31-year-old was previously fighting under the Matchroom Boxing banner, but the company has decided not to renew Hunter’s contract following its expiration.

Hunter is ranked in the top ten with all four major sanctioning bodies and is undefeated in his last seven outings. The only defeat of his professional career was a points decision loss at cruiserweight to Oleksandr Usyk(17-0, 13 KO) in 2017.

The ‘Bounty Hunter’ was last in action on the undercard of Joshua-Ruiz 2, where he drew with Russia’s Alexander Povetkin (35-2-1, 24 KO). Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Olympian said that he was targeting a return to the ring in September.

“I’m putting that out there. I’m basically a free agent now, and I’m looking for opportunities. I’m not sure where that’s going to lead me.

“I love Matchroom. I don’t have a problem with Matchroom. I like the company, but I think it wasn’t feasible for them to continue to allow me to be a part of their company, but not fully embracing the company. They had to make a decision where they fully embraced me or let me go,” Hunter said.

It is hard to see Hunter remaining unsigned for too long, as the Las Vegas-based fighter still has plenty of miles left in his professinal tank. Hopefully he is back in the ring sooner rather than later
