Gilberto Ramirez Is A Free Agent After Parting From Top Rank
Unbeaten former super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez has split from long-time promoters Top Rank after coming to an amicable agreement to part ways. The 29-year-old is now a free agent and presumably will begin fielding calls from pretty much every promotional company in boxing.
Speaking to Boxing Scene Ramirez confirmed he had parted way with Top Rank and thank Bob Arum for helping him to the top of the game, he said.
“I have decided to move my career in a different direction. I would like to thank Bob Arum and all of the Top Rank family for all the support they have given to my career. They always treated me with class. I can’t wait for the next chapter of my career. There are many big fights in my division and I am here to take over.”
A spokesperson for Top Rank commented only to say the separation was amicable and they wished Ramirez the best with the rest of his career.
“We have reached an amicable settlement with all parties. We wish Gilberto and his team the best of luck in the future,” the statement read.
Ramírez become the WBO super middleweight champion in 2016 when he defeated long time champion Arthur Abraham in a shutout victory on all three scorecards in Las Vegas. He defended his title five times including two wins over his nemesis Jesse Hart before relinquishing his title and moving up to light-heavyweight.
“Zurdo” had his first fight at 175lbs in April and wiped out Tommy Karpency inside four rounds. Due to the ongoing global pandemic he hasn’t’ fought since but is staying ready and is constantly training.
Once Ramirez finds a new promoter, he will begin chasing the biggest names at 175.
“I want Dmitry Bivol, Jean Pascal, Sergey Kovalev, Chávez Jr. – any big name I am interested in,” he said.
