David Benavídez To ‘Look For The Knockout’ Against Alexis Angulo

WBC Super Middleweight World Champion David Benavídez (22-0, 19 KO) will return to the squared circle next Saturday (August 15) when he takes on Alexis Angulo (26-1, 22 KO) inside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Benavídez is coming off a stoppage victory over two-time 168 pounds champion Anthony Dirrell, which took place last September. The 23-year-old made history in 2017 when he defeated Ronald Gavril, and at just 20 years of age, became the youngest super middleweight champion in history.

“It’s been almost a year since the last time I fought, so I’m very eager to get back in the ring and give the fans a great fight,” Benavídez said.

“Training camp has been amazing. Fortunately, my dad opened his own gym just before the pandemic, so we’ve had private training and been able to safely bring in sparring partners to help me work. I’m facing a very tricky and rugged fighter, so I’m taking him very seriously. I feel like I can take advantage of some openings in his defense and look for the knockout like I do every fight.”

Angulo comes into this bout riding a three-fight win streak, with his most recent victory coming in January when he defeated Anthony Sims Jr via split decision. The 36-year-old has previously fought for the WBO super middleweight title but came up short when he lost to Gilberto Ramirez via unanimous decision in 2018.

“This is going to be a great fight for the fans because of the style I bring to the ring. Benavidez is a strong champion, but my style will be too much for him, and I will have my hand raised on fight night,” Angulo exclaimed.

The card is also set to feature an interim WBA lightweight title bout between Rolando Romero (11-0, 10 KO) and Jackson Maríñez (19-0, 7 KO). Heavyweights Otto Wallen (20-1, 1NC, 13 KO) and Travis Kaufmann (32-3, 23 KO) are also set to face-off with both men looking to bounce back from respective losses to Tyson Fury and Luis Ortiz.

The card will air at 9 pm (ET) on SHOWTIME.
