Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim Given Final 15-Day Extension For Purse Bid

Canelo Alvarez and Avni Yildirim have been given a final 15-day extension to discuss the purse bid for their ordered WBC super middleweight title fight.

The purse bid was originally scheduled for September 21, but was delayed for another 15 days due to the current legal situation of Alvarez. A resolution was expected on Tuesday, however, the WBC have now granted a final extension of 15 days as a show of good faith.

A resolution is now expected on October 21.

“Understanding the current situation of WBC Franchise champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, The WBC in good faith extends 15 days and for a final time the purse offer ceremony for the Alvarez vs Yildirim fight, for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight title,” a statement from the WBC read. “The WBC will inquire the definite status in this period and in order to make a final determination and ruling on the division.”

What has complicated matters is Alvarez’s current legal dispute with promoter Golden Boy Promotions and broadcast partner DAZN in which he is claiming damages of $280 million due to a breach of contract.

Although the case — the latest of which was filed late last month — has complicated matters for Alvarez to compete, as per his legal team’s actions, there is an avenue for the Mexican to compete externally to the terms of his current contract.

However, it still remains to be seen if the issue will be resolved even after another 15 days. Alvarez last competed in November when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light heavyweight title.
