Kubrat Pulev Says Anthony Joshua’s Strengths Is His ‘Tan Is Better Than Mine’
Kubrat Pulev made a controversial comment about Anthony Joshua’s skin color ahead of their heavyweight title fight in December.
Joshua and Pulev are set to fight for Joshua’s WBA, IBF and WBO titles, on December 12 at a location TBD. For the Bulgarian, he was asked about what Joshua does well and brought up his skin color.
“His strengths? I’d say he has a very powerful punch undeniably,” said Pulev to Sky Sports. “What are his other strengths? His tan is better than mine.”
Sky Sports has since requested for further comment from Anthony Joshua, Matchroom Boxing and Kubrat Pulev.
Joshua and Pulev were supposed to fight in June at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but the fight was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the fight was postponed, many had hoped the Englishman would instead fight Tyson Fury in a mega-fight but Joshua will have to fight his mandatory title challenger in Pulev.
Anthony Joshua reclaimed his heavyweight titles last time out with a decision win over Andy Ruiz Jr in December. Before that, he was knocked out by Ruiz Jr. in June in Joshua’s American debut at MSG in a massive upset. The loss is still the lone one on Joshua’s record. He does hold notable wins over Joseph Parker, Alexander Povetkin, Dillian Whyte, and Wladimir Klitschko.
Kubrat Pulev, meanwhile, is 28-1 and riding an eight-fight winning streak but has not fought since November of last year where he beat Rydell Booker by decision. In his career, his lone lass came to Wladimir Klitschko by knockout but the Bulgarian does have notable wins over Hughie Fury, Derek Chisora and Kevin Johnson among others.
For many fans, they are hoping Joshua does get his hand raised so it can set up the Fury fight in 2021. It would be one of the biggest heavyweight boxing fights of all-time. Yet, before that happens, Joshua needs to get past a very tough test in Pulev.
