Gary Russell Jr Wants Gervonta Davis Fight:’You Sound Like You Making Excuses’

WBC World Featherweight Champion Gary Russell Jr has called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis. The 32-year-old made the comments during a recent appearance on the Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer.

“You’ll fight a (Yuriorkis) Gamboa, but you won’t fight a Mr. Gary Russel Jr. You sound like you making excuses,” Russell said.

“We would sellout anywhere, D.C., Maryland, Virginia. You pick the arena and everybody and their mother and grandmother will be there to witness me spank that ass. You know it and Floyd (Mayweather) knows it!”

Russell, whose record stands at 31-1, 18KOs, has not lost since 2014 when he went down to Vasyl Lomachenko via majority decision. Since then, he has picked up the WBC crown and made five straight defenses. He is also currently ranked the No.2 featherweight in the world by Ring Magazine.

However, one of the criticisms of Russell is about how often he fights. Staring in 2015, Russell has fought precisely once a year, a statistic he says he would like to change.

“I’ve been calling out everybody who’s supposed to be somebody. I think the reason you only see me competing once a year is because a lot of these fighters, a lot of these promoters and managers don’t feel as though it’s in their best interest to put their fighter, or these fighters best interest to get in the ring with me,” Russell commented.

“I’m not at all satisfied fighting once a year. I would love to be able to compete and display my skills and my abilities to my fans, to the people who generally love the work and the effort that I put in. I just play the cards that are dealt.”

Russell has spent the better part of the last decade competing as a featherweight but said that he is now open to take fights across a range of weight classes.

“I’m willing to fluctuate from 126 to 130 to 135, and if anybody got anything slick to say out their mouth in any other weight class, I’m willing to meet them halfway too.”

The Washington D.C. native’s most recent outing was in February when he scored a unanimous decision win over the then-undefeated Tugstsogt Nyambayar. If this recent interview is anything to go by, fans can expect to see a lot more of Russell in the forthcoming year.
