Report: DAZN Considering Action Against Sergey Kovalev For Hosting Illegal Stream Of Canelo vs. Smith

Streaming service DAZN is reportedly considering taking action against Sergey Kovalev for hosting an illegal stream of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith title fight this past weekend.

That’s according to The Athletic who that report executives at the streaming service were “alarmed and extremely frustrated” at Kovalev’s actions, especially as he is set to fight on the service on January 30 against Bektemir Melikuziev.

Alvarez comfortably outpointed Smith on Saturday night to become the WBA and WBC super-middleweight champion. To watch the fight legally, you needed a DAZN subscription which is either $19.99 monthly or $99.99 annually.

However, over 2,500 viewers were viewing the fight on Kovalev’s Instagram Live story which The Athletic states is “a potential loss for DAZN between $50,000 (monthly subscription) and $250,000 (annual).”

Of course, those viewers would have probably found another way to watch the fight illegally if Kovalev didn’t decide to host it.

Regardless, it’s the latest in a number of mishaps from Kovalev which includes three years probation in October after an alleged attack on a woman and her dog in 2018. In addition, he was removed from a flight last summer after being accused of kissing a female passenger and throwing cash at her.

A DAZN representative refused to provide comment to The Athletic as has Kovalev’s manager Egis Klimas.

Kovalev last competed in November last year when he was knocked out by Alvarez in their light heavyweight title fight.
