British Boxing Board of Control Announce Temporary Ban On UK Boxing
United Kingdom boxing fans will have to wait until at least February before getting the chance to see any local action.
The British Boxing Board of Control, which governs professional boxing in Britain, has today pushed pause on all local boxing events due to the recent rise of COVID-19 cases in the UK.
“Following the increase in COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom and the effects such increases has on the NHS and the work of the Board Medical Officers, it has been decided that no tournaments under the jurisdiction of the British Boxing Board of Control will take place in January 2021,” the BBofC announced earlier today.
“A further review by the Board’s Medical Panel and Stewards will take place later in January in relation to tournaments from February onwards.”
Following the news, both Matchroom Boxing and MTK Global sent out press releases. Matchroom had a show on Sat. January 30, scheduled, with David Avanesyan taking on Josh Kelly for the European welterweight title. MTK had a fight night set for Friday, January 22. Both events have been postponed to as yet unknown dates.
A one month halt on events is not the end of the world. However, the worry will be if the UK continues to see high numbers of COVID-19 cases as this could cause the ban to be pushed out even further.
