Tyson Fury Explains Why He Licked Deontay Wilder Mid-Fight

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has explained why he licked Deontay Wilder’s blood during their February 2020 rematch.

The pair fought to a controversial draw in 2018. Two years later Fury left no doubt as he dominated Wilder from the opening bell. ‘The Gypsy King’ ultimately finished the fight in the seventh round.

Before the finish came Fury made the unusual move of licking blood off his beat up opponent.

One year on from the fight Fury has finally explained his actions.

“In the pre-fight interviews, I said I wanted to taste Deontay Wilder’s blood this time. So I had an opportunity to do it there in Round Six,” Fury said to ESPN. “So I had to taste his blood just so I could get the feeling of what my prey tasted like. I was a hunter, I was like a lion, and he was a gazelle, a large gazelle, and I took it down, and then that was it, game over.”

“The animal instinct comes out inside the boxing ring. And it’s either him or you,” Fury added. “But, it’s weird because I’ve not noticed anyone licking anybody else’s blood before. Hope he doesn’t have any germs or anything, or I’ve got his cooties now, baby.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Fury hasn’t fought since beating Wilder last year. He is hoping to secure an undisputed fight against his compatriot Anthony Joshua.

The 32-year-old was originally contractually obligated to fight Wilder for a third time. However, the contract has since expired and due to the American’s numerous accusations of foul play Fury is no longer interested in another rematch.
