Claressa Shields Says She Wants At Least $1 Million To Drop Down To 147 And Fight Katie Taylor
Claressa Shields has made her pay demand known for a potential fight against Katie Taylor.
After Shields beat Marie-Eve Dicaire on Friday to unify the 154-pound titles, many fans wanted to see the Taylor fight happen. They are the two best women boxers in the sport and it would be a massive fight. However, weight is a major concern in making it happen.
“Katie Taylor is not the worry in that sentence, the 147 is,” Shields told Dan Canobbio in the ring (via boxingscene). “Katie is a great fighter. They gotta pay me a lotta money for me to lose my butt to go down to 147. Like, at the end of the day, I’m a woman and that’s something that I love about my body. I might not have no big breasts, but I’ve got a nice butt. And I will lose that going to 147, so they need to come with that dough, and I’ll be seeing Katie at 147, as long as they come at least with a million. Talk to me nice.”
Claressa Shields is currently 11-0 as a pro and has a decorated amateur background where she won the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medals.
If Shields and Taylor end up fighting, and Shields wins, her legacy in not only the sport but the world would be set according to her promoter Dmitriy Salita. Salita also wants the Taylor fight to take place.
“Claressa Shields is a trailblazer, a pioneer as an athlete and a social influencer who uses her gift to advance justice and equality for women around the world a la Billie Jean King, Shirley Chisholm and other incredible super women leaders throughout history,” Salita said to Sky Sports. “There was no better moment for her to accomplish another first of being a two-division undisputed world champion than on the weekend of International Women’s Day.”
