Estrada & ‘Chocolatito’ Agree That A Trilogy Bout Should Be Next
In what is quickly shaping up to be an all-time great trilogy, Roman Gonzalez (50-3) is more than happy to take on Juan Francisco Estrada (42-3) a third time. The two elite boxers first clashed 8 years ago, as Gonzalez put on an impressive display to pick up a unanimous decision victory.
However, their recent rematch saw Estrada pick up the win, despite landing 74 less shots than Gonzalez. The natural next step would be to create a rubber match between the two 115lbers. Thankfully both men seem to agree.
Speaking with DAZN’s Chris Mannix, ‘Chocolatito’ revealed that he beleives he was unfortunate not to come away with the win, but is willing to run it back a third time. “I won both of them, “Whatever [Estrada] wants, we’ll do it. I’m very happy with my performance and the crowd enjoyed the fight.”
“It was a better fight than the first one. I felt strong, and I felt I won. In the last round, I gave it all. It was a great round. The result is what God wanted. And I’m happy because I’m going back home to see my family (transcribed by Boxing Scene).
‘El Gallo’ agreed that the fight could have gone either way. Speaking at the post-fight press conference Estrada had the following to say: “Honestly, I thought it was going to be a draw because it was such a close fight. I don’t know what the judges thought about the fight, but we were able to win. We knew it was going to be a war and, like I said, Roman Gonzalez deserves a rematch” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene).
Whilst the fight is certainly on the immediate horizon, Estrada may have mandatory requirements that take him elsewhere first. Post fight, Eddie Hearn revealed that there is a possibility that Estrada will have to make a mandated defence against Sor Rungvisai (50-5-1) before completing the trilogy with Gonzalez.
