Edgar Berlanga Decisions Demond Nicholson To End KO Streak
Edgar Berlanga remained undefeated but got past the first round for the first time in his career.
Berlanga, the highly-touted KO artist, was looking to improve to 17-0 and did just that. In the fight, he was landing heavy shots and dropped Desmond Nicholson four times including the dying seconds of the fight. It was a dominating performance from Berlanga who says he’s glad he got some ring time.
“It’s kind of f—ed up that I had to go those rounds with all these people here,” Berlanga told ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna after the win (via boxingscene). “They wanted me to score another 1st round knockout but I enjoyed getting that experience.”
Edgar Berlanga dropped Nicholson for the first time in the second round as Nicholson was trying to stay on the outside. After surviving, he got dropped again in the third round, and in the fifth, he got dropped again. Berlanga was using landing power shots to the head and body, but Nicholson was having some good defense. The fourth and final knockdown happened in the eighth and final round as he barely made it to the bell.
Although it was a dominating performance from Edgar Berlanga who landed 110-of-306 total punches (36%) according to Compubox, compared to 82-of-392 (21%) for Nicholson, he says he wasn’t happy about his performance. Instead, he says he knows he can do a lot better.
“I thought it was a C,” Berlanga said in assessing his first distance fight. “I could have done a lot better, there were a lot of things I could’ve did (better). [Head trainer Andre Rozier] was telling me to throw the jab and follow body shots. I didn’t follow instructions and had to do the pushups.”
Who is next for Edgar Berlanga is uncertain at this time, but his stock continues to rise.
