Judge Rules That Third Fight Between Deontay Wilder & Tyson Fury Must Take Place Before Sep 15
You did not think it would be that easy, did you? Just when it appeared that the long-sought-after mega-bout between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua was going ahead, a new development threatens to derail the contest.
The Dailystar’s Chris McKenna has reported that Daniel Weinstein, the judge overseeing the arbitration case between Deontay Wilder and Fury regarding the pair’s ongoing dispute surrounding the third bout between them, has ruled in favor of Wilder. Judge Weinstein has told both camps that a rematch between the men must take place before September 15.
Fury defeated Wilder in February 2020 to claim the WBC Heavyweight Championship. Wilder then exercised his rematch clause, but the fight never took place, owing to such obstacles as the outbreak of Covid-19. At the end of 2020, Fury’s team said that the rematch clause had expired.
“The contract says Wilder’s rights ran out at the end of October, and I really believe that contract displays clearly that Wilder does not have a claim for a third fight,” Top Rank’s Bob Arum said in December when speaking on the matter.
However, that was never entirely the case as the matter had yet to be fully resolved with Wilder’s camp.
Today’s news will impact the planning of the Joshua-Fury fight, which is scheduled for August, but fans will have to wait and see what sort of impact it makes. It could be that a deal is worked out, which allows the fight to go ahead. However, until more is known, fans will be left with more questions than answers regarding the situation at the top of the heavyweight division.
