Mauricio Lara vs. Josh Warrington 2 Set For September 4 In England
Mauricio Lara and Josh Warrington will be running it back.
The two featherweights met in February where Lara stunned Warrington in his own country with a ninth-round TKO. Although Warrington is the IBF featherweight champion, the first fight against Lara was considered a stay-busy one but that was far from the case. Lara came out strong and scored knockdowns in the fourth and ninth rounds en route to the stoppage win. It’s considered to be one of the bigger upsets this year as Warrington was a 25-1 favorite.
After the loss, Warrington was stunned as it was his first career loss but now the rematch will be a big one.
“Obviously, I’m hurting inside,” Warrington said days after the defeat. “I’ve lost my unbeaten record. That’s something I have treasured and it is a dent. Anyone who knows me can tell you I stand proud.
“Good luck to Mauricio Lara, who is a serious opponent for anybody. He is heavy-handed and holds power that will trouble any featherweight,” Warrington continued. “Will we meet again in a boxing ring? Who knows. We only fought a couple of days ago. But if the chance comes I will jump at it.”
Now, Warrington and Lara will rematch on September 4 in Warrington’s hometown of Leeds, England. The event will stream live on DAZN and Katie Taylor will defend her undisputed lightweight championship in the chief-support bout.
Prior to the loss, Warrington held notable wins over Carl Frampton, Kid Galahad, Lee Selby, and Patrik Hyland among others.
Lara, meanwhile, is on a 12-fight unbeaten streak as he’s 11 and one No Contest. However, the win over Warrington is the biggest of his career and he looks to prove it wasn’t a fluke.
