Josh Taylor vs Terence Crawford To Take Place In Edinburgh
When Top Rank’s Bob Arum speaks, it’s best to listen because it means a significant fight is on the horizon.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Arum recently revealed that super-lightweight king Josh Taylor will be fighting Terence Crawford in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2022. (H/T Sky Sports)
“Josh is a major talent,” Arum told the outlet. “He will be fighting Jack Catterall in November. Then, we hope, early next year, we will be able to do a fight that will blow the lid off of everything in the UK. That would be Taylor challenging Crawford for the welterweight title.”
As the head of Top Rank, Arum has control over both fighters’ careers, so if he is sharing this news, the fight will likely happen. “It would be primetime in the UK,” Arum continued. “We’d love to do it there in the spring with 60,000 people in Scotland.”
While fans would love to see this fight sooner, Taylor must first face his WBO mandatory challenger Jack Catterall. If he can retain his title after the fight, Crawford would be next as Taylor attempts to win the title in the higher weight class.
For his part, Taylor is excited about the possibility and is hoping that the fight takes place in either Edinburgh Castle or Hibernian’s football stadium at Easter Road. And while pundits may think he’s no match for Crawford, who currently holds the WBO welterweight title, Taylor disagrees.
“There’s always been a fight – Viktor Postol was a step too far, Regis Prograis was a step too far, Jose Ramirez was a step too far.”
“They were all too good for me and I keep proving them wrong, and I’ll prove them wrong again. I believe in my own ability. I believe I’ve fought better opposition than Crawford has, although Crawford is very, very good, he’s elite level.”
Along with Manny Pacquiao, Crawford is one of the dream matchups that Taylor would like to face. “We can make these fights happen, so it’s a mouth-watering time for me at the minute,” Taylor shared. “It’s very exciting, the prospect of these massive fights, so it is huge.”
“Obviously Pacquiao has got the Errol Spence fight coming up, but [we’ve] made the conversations and the connections, and I’m pretty sure they’ve seen me fighting as well. Seen what I want to do is go up to 147 [lbs] so I’m pretty sure they’ll be interested in having those fights as well.”
Taylor will have his hand full with Crawford, who will likely welcome another visit to the UK. The WBO welterweight champion has stopped Kell Brook and Amir Khan and defeated Ricky Burns in Scotland.
