Canelo Alvarez Believes Brian Castano beat Jermell Charlo
Canelo Alvarez thinks Brian Castano beat Jermell Charlo on Saturday.
Castano and Charlo fought to unify the 154lbs division in a highly-anticipated scrap. It was back-and-forth and when it went to the scorecards, many were torn on who had won. On the broadcast, the unofficial scorecard had it a draw while the majority on social media had it for Castano. For Alvarez, he also believes Castano won the fight.
During a video call that was filmed by Little Giant Boxing, Alvarez praised Castano and said he thought he won the fight. However, the judges 114-113 Castano, 117-111 Charlo, and 114-114.
“Brian Castano, I’ll tell you one thing. For me, you won. They [the judges] saw a draw but for me you won, you bastard, what a great fight. I congratulate you very much,” Canelo Alvarez said (via boxingscene).
And Castano replied – “Thank you very much, brother.”
Although the fight was a draw, it’s unlikely an immediate rematch will be next. The mandatory challengers will no doubt get their shot and if Castano and Charlo get their hand raised, perhaps the rematch will happen.
Castano, meanwhile, has made it clear he wants the rematches as he says he wants to unify the division and be the undisputed champ. Castano was also clear after the fight that he thought he won with ease and was shocked by the scorecards.
“I think if Charlo is not afraid for a rematch, and I don’t think he is afraid, I don’t know what his plans are,” Castano said. “If he’s planning to move up to 160, that’s up to him. But like I said before, I need the three belts that he has, so I’m up for a rematch, of course. But I don’t know what, exactly, are his plans.”
