Keith Thurman Interested In Jermell Charlo Fight At 154lbs
Keith Thurman is intrigued by the possibility of fighting Jermell Charlo at 154-pounds to win a belt in another weight class.
Charlo is the current WBA, WBC, and IBF champion and just recently fought Brian Castano to a draw in a unification fight for the division. It’s uncertain if a rematch is next, but if it isn’t, Thurman said he would be intrigued by that fight.
“It’s hard to say no to making history and becoming a champion in a new weight class,” Thurman told FightHype.com (via BoxingScene). “I’m here for the love of the sport. I love the credentials I have. I want to further my credentials. That fight entices me as far as lining up to further my credentials. Worst case scenario, I fall short, [I] can hope right back into the welterweight division.”
Keith Thurman has not fought since July of 2019 when he dropped a split decision to Manny Pacquiao. It was a very close fight and since then, Thurman has been on the sidelines. Although many think he wants the fight against Errol Spence Jr. at 147lbs, he says he isn’t opposed to moving up in weight to fight Charlo.
“I’ve always had small admirations to move up, but I always felt that it would always be more in that 34, 35 age bracket, maybe at the last chapter [of my career], 36 and beyond,” Thurman, 31, said. “So, it’s never been on the forefront of my mind yet. It’s always been a ‘maybe later’ kind of issue. You know, too many belts, too much for the history books, I might have to sign up.”
Keith Thurman is the former WBA super welterweight champion. He’s currently 29-1 and one No Contest where he holds notable wins over Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, and Josesito Lopez.
