Errol Spence Out Of Manny Pacquiao Fight After Retinal Tear, Yordenis Ugas To Step In
The boxing world was hit with some unfortunate news as Errol Spence Jr. had to pull out of his welterweight title fight with Manny Pacquiao.
The news was announced by PBC on Tuesday as Spence will no longer be defending his titles against Pacquiao on August 21 in Las Vegas after it was discovered that he had a retinal tear.
“Unfortunately, the doctors found a tear in my left eye and said I needed to get surgery on it ASAP and that there was no way I could fight with my eye in that condition,” Spence said soon after the news broke. “I’ll be back. We’ve come back from worse.”
Spence, whose torn retina was discovered during a pre-fight medical, flew back to Dallas on Tuesday and will have surgery to repair the tear on Wednesday.
He also added the following:
“I came back from worse,” he tweeted.
Here’s what Pacquiao said in response to the news:
“The proper way — and the only way — to win a world title is inside the ring,” he said. “… I ask everyone to join me in praying for a full and complete recovery for Errol Spence Jr.
“Thank God his physical examination discovered his eye condition before he suffered any further damage.”
Pacquiao will remain on the card as he will face Yordenis Ugas instead. Ugas — who was already on the card — will defend his WBA welterweight title which was notably awarded to him because of the former’s hiatus.
It will remain to be seen if this is Pacquiao’s last fight.
