Deontay Wilder Feels Retirement Is Getting Close, Hopes To Unify Division
Deontay Wilder sees retirement from boxing in the near future.
Wilder will look to become a two-time WBC heavyweight champion when he challenges current champion Tyson Fury in their highly-awaited trilogy match on Saturday.
A win would not only end his rivalry with Fury — at least for the moment — but set Wilder up to face the winner of the eventual rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua in a title unification clash.
Whether that’s what actually pans out remains to be seen, especially with all the failed attempts at title unification clashes in recent years.
However, Wilder is hoping he can be the one face in the heavyweight division soon as he feels retirement is getting close.
“I can feel it getting close, retirement…” Wilder said on the Last Stand Podcast (via Michael Benson). “I’m seeking one champion, one face, one name. The faster I can get that, the faster I can retire and get the hell out of here.”
Given that Wilder turns 36 later this month, it does appear he only has a few years left in the sport.
It would be some accomplishment if he was the one who ended up unifying the division before riding off into the sunset.
