Canelo Alvarez Believes Ryan Garcia Is ‘Wasting His Talent’, Doesn’t See ‘100 Percent’ Dedication
Canelo Alvarez believes Ryan Garcia needs to show more dedication to the sport of boxing.
In a recent interview with Complex, the super middleweight champion was asked about the potential of Garcia who many believe to be a future superstar and world champion.
Although Alvarez acknowledged Garcia had plenty of talent, he also believes that talent is being wasted at the moment.
“Look, Ryan has a lot of talent. But to me in my eyes, he’s wasting a lot of time and wasting his talent,” Alvarez said. “I look at him and don’t see him 100 percent dedicated and, to us, that’s a bad signal. We always remind him as a team to come to the gym, to train, and to learn because you need to be in the gym.
“You’re learning day-by-day, at the very minimum fighting five times a year. When I was beginning my career, I did 15 fights in one year. That’s where I was at the beginning of my career. So definitely he needs to be a little more dedicated.”
Garcia recently pulled out of his November 27 fight against Joseph Diaz due to a hand injury. He has undergone successful surgery since and is targeting a 2022 comeback.
Prior to that, he pulled out of his July fight with Javier Fortuna as he needed to take care of his mental health.
The 23-year-old last competed in January when he TKO’d Luke Campbell to win the WBC interim lightweight title at the time.
