Devin Haney Open To Replacing Rolando Romero And Fighting Gervonta Davis, Says Eddie Hearn
Devin Haney is open to fighting Gervonta Davis next time out.
Davis was supposed to fight Rolando Romero on Dec. 5, but that fight is unlikely to happen after sexual assault allegations against Romero surfaced over the weekend. Boxingscene.com then reported that Romero will indeed be removed from the fight and according to Eddie Hearn, Devin Haney is interested in the fight.
“I don’t know anything about the [Romero] situation but I spoke with Devin Haney and I said, ‘are you happy to put your name in the mix?’ And he said, ‘yeah,’ because at the moment ‘no-go [Joseph] Diaz has not signed his contract after being offered more to fight Devin Haney than he was getting to fight Ryan Garcia, so we’ll have to see what happens,” Hearn told Boxing Social. “We want to make the Jojo Diaz fight, but he has to hurry up and sign the contract.”
A fight between Haney and Davis would be massive and would be highly-anticipated. However, according to Hearn, they are leaning towards JoJo Diaz for Haney’s next fight.
“We need to make statement fights in the U.S market for Devin Haney, and our preference is JoJo Diaz. It’s five weeks tonight,” said Hearn. “They’re all training for that date, even JoJo. He was supposed to be fighting on November 27th [against Ryan Garcia], so he’s ready. But at some point, we need to go on sale. On December the 4th at the MGM Grand.”
Devin Haney is a 26-0 and coming off a decision win over Jorge Linares back in May. He also holds notable wins over Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Zaur Abdullaev. Gervonta Davis, meanwhile, is 25-0 and beat Mario Berrios by TKO last time out. He too has beat Gamboa but also holds wins over Leo Santa Cruz.
