David Benavidez To Fight David Lemieux For WBC Interim Super Middleweight Belt
David Benavidez just needs one more win to get his wish of fighting Canelo Alvarez.
Benavidez was hoping to face Alvarez next after the latter unified the super middleweight division last month following an 11th-round TKO win over Caleb Plant.
However, Alvarez is moving up to light heavyweight when he challenges Ilunga Makabu for the WBC cruiserweight title.
In the meantime, the WBC have approved an interim super middleweight title bout between Benavidez and David Lemieux.
“The WBC granted Saul Alvarez, a special permission to challenge the WBC champion in the Cruiserweight division in 2022. Reason for which, the Board of Governors approved a WBC interim championship in the division which will be contested by #1 David Benavidez and #2 David Lemieux.”
Benavidez — who was a former WBC super middleweight champion before he was stripped after missing weight — remains undefeated. His last outing saw him TKO Kyrone Davis last month.
Lemieux, meanwhile, is on a five-fight winning streak following his unanimous decision defeat to Billy Joe Saunders back in December 2017. The former IBF middleweight champion last TKO’d David Zegarra in June.
