Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Ends The Year With Win Over David Zegarra
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has ended 2021 with a win over David Zegarra.
Chavez Jr. returned to the ring on Saturday in his 61st professional fight and picked up a lackluster decision win over Zegarra. Although the Mexican got his hand raised, it was not the dominant win many expected from Chavez Jr. who has noticeably lost a step.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (53-6-1 and one No Contest), as mentioned, is coming off the win over Zegarra. Prior to that, he suffered a decision loss to Anderson Silva in June which was a disappointing loss as many thought he should’ve walked through Silva who was past his prime and was cut from the UFC after losing several in a row.
Chavez Jr. is now just 3-3 in his last six and has lost to the top fighters like Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs, while also losing to Andrzej Fonfara among others. He does hold notable wins over Andy Lee, Marcos Reyes, and Dominik Britsch among others. The Mexican is also the former WBC middleweight champion.
David Zegarra (34-7) is 37-years-old and entering the fight against Chavez Jr., he was on a three-fight losing skid and he got finished in all three of them. So, him going the distance against Chavez Jr. is a win for him despite losing as many expected him to get blown out in this fight, but that was not the case. Zegarra hasn’t fought many known opponents but he did hold his own against Chavez Jr.
