Errol Spence Jr. vs. Yordenis Ugas Targeted After Stanionis Agrees To Step Aside
Errol Spence Jr. will be fighting Yordenis Ugas next after Eimantas Stanionis has agreed to step aside.
According to BoxingScene.com, the WBA granted permission for Ugas to move forward with plans for a three-belt welterweight title unification bout with Spence, who owns the IBF/WBC titles. The fight came together after Stanionis agreed to step aside, likely incentivized with a cash offer along with a shot at WBA “World” welterweight titlist Radzhab Butaev.
“Stanionis has agreed to withdraw from the mandatory title fight,” Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, longtime president of the WBA informed BoxingScene.com while ringside for a Showtime Pay-Per-View event at AMALIE Arena in Tampa. “He will now fight Butaev. Errol Spence and Yordenis Ugas, Merry Christmas to you both and let’s have a great fight.”
Errol Spence Jr. (27-0) was supposed to fight Manny Pacquiao earlier this year but an eye injury forced him to pull out and Ugas then took the fight. Spence Jr. last fought back in December of 2020 where he beat Danny Garcia by decision in his return to the ring after being involved in a car crash. In his career, he holds notable wins over Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, Samuel Vargas, and Kell Brook among others.
Yordenis Ugas (27-4), meanwhile, picked up the biggest win of his career back in August as he defeated Pacquiao by decision. The fight ended up being Pacquiao’s last and with the win, Ugas retained his WBA belt for the first time. He’s currently riding a four-fight winning streak with his last loss coming at the hands of Shawn Porter who he dropped a split decision to. He does hold notable wins over Omar Figueroa Jr., Mike Dallas Jr., and Jamal James among others, but if he beats Spence Jr. it would be a massive win for him.
Although Errol Spence Jr. vs. Yordenis Ugas is a good fight many fans were hoping it would be Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford, however, that fight is still one that is not happening for whatever reason.
