Eddie Hearn Provides Update On Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte Fight, Feels March Is Unlikely
According to Eddie Hearn, a fight between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte is unlikely to happen in March.
The pair are set to collide for the WBC heavyweight title with a March date being the plan should a deal be agreed.
However, Whyte is not satisfied with the WBC’s purse split of 80/20 in favor of Fury and prefers something closer to 45 percent for himself.
Hearn — who promotes Whyte — recently revealed he would be appealing against the decision.
And given everything that’s happening, Hearn believes a March date is unlikely — especially for a fight this big.
“People keep talking about March dates – that’s starting to look unrealistic for a fight of this magnitude,” Hearn told BBC 5 Live Boxing (via BoxingScene). “Either March, April, early May potentially. This is the window for the fight. Depends what happens this week. There are so many conversations going on behind the scenes right now. Something could turn at any moment.
“You’re talking about a lot of money – a difference of 25% [in the split dispute]. The normal split for any mandatory challenger is a lot more than 80-20. The normal split for an interim champion is up to 45%. We feel in terms of the commercial value of Dillian Whyte and the time he’s had to wait, 80-20 is quite ridiculous really.”
Eddie Hearn: Dillian Whyte Will Still Get Fury Fight
All of this is not ideal for the fight. But with that said, it shouldn’t scupper it either.
Hearn still believes a Fury vs. Whyte fight will happen — however, things will need to be fair as far as his fighter is concerned.
“[It] looks like Dillian Whyte will definitely get his shot at the WBC title, but we have to fight for his rights and make sure it’s fair,” he added. “It’s not going to stand in the way of the fight.”
