Oscar De La Hoya Canelo Alvarez ‘Is Too Flatfooted,’ Would Lose To Dmitry Bivol In A Potential Rematch
Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t think Canelo Alvarez will beat Dmitry Bivol if the two rematch after the Gennady Golovkin bout.
De La Hoya used to promote Alvarez and was vocal throughout the build-up to the fight and after that, he didn’t like the fight for the Mexican. Bivol ended up cruising to a decision win and although Alvarez is set for his trilogy match against Gennady Golovkin, and after that, he has said he wants the Bivol rematch which De La Hoya doesn’t think will go well.
“If Canelo fights Bivol again, it’ll be worse,” De La Hoya said at the Garcia-Fortuna press conference. “That’s the bottom line. Styles make fights.”
Why De La Hoya doesn’t think the rematch will go well for Canelo Alvarez is simple. He thinks the Mexican is too flatfooted and Bivol’s smarts will be the difference.
“Unless Canelo changes trainers, unless he changes trainers and he gets better, and his footwork [improves, he won’t beat Bivol],” De La Hoya said. “I think Canelo is too flatfooted for somebody like Bivol who uses his head and his intelligence. If you look at Canelo’s losses, which are only with Maywaeather and Bivol, he lost because of his footwork. He lost because the other guys’ being light on their feet and him being too heavy on his feet. If he does change trainers, he has a shot at beating Bivol.”
Although Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t think Canelo Alvarez will beta Dmitry Bivol in the rematch, the Mexican will likely do the rematch anyway. It likely won’t take place until next May but he has been vocal that he thinks he can win that fight and wants to prove it.
Do you agree with Oscar De La Hoya that Dmitry Bivol will beat Canelo Alvarez in a potential rematch?
