Andy Ruiz Jr. Not Overlooking Luis Ortiz But Says ‘A Matchup Against Deontay Wilder Would Be An Amazing Fight’
Andy Ruiz Jr. believes making the Deontay Wilder fight would be easy, however, he knows he can’t look past Luis Ortiz.
Ruiz Jr. and Ortiz are set to meet in a highly-anticipated bout on Sunday night from Los Angeles. It’s a crucial fight for both men’s careers and for Ruiz Jr., he believes if he beats Ortiz it sets up a massive bout between him and Wilder given they are both on PBC.
“A matchup against Deontay Wilder would be an amazing fight,” Ruiz Jr. said during an open workout recently in San Diego. “The heavyweight division is wide open, but I’m not overlooking Luis Ortiz. If Wilder is next, he’s next. It’s an easy fight to make.”
Andy Ruiz Jr. is coming off a decision win over Chris Arreola to return to the win column after the loss to Anthony Joshua to lose his title after he knocked out the Brit. Heading into the rematch, Ruiz Jr. was overweight and had said he wasn’t in the right mental state, but for this bout against Luis Ortiz, he says that is much different.
“I feel like I’m in a good state of mind right now,” Ruiz Jr. said. “I’m doing everything that I’m supposed to do. I underestimated my last opponent, but I’m really focused on what Luis Ortiz brings. This is another chapter for me and my career.”
If Ruiz Jr. does indeed win on Sunday, he will be paying close attention to the October 15 fight between Wilder and Robert Helenius as even Wilder has mentioned Ruiz Jr. as a potential next opponent.
“If Ruiz wins, it’s not if, it’s a matter of when,” Wilder told co-hosts Kenneth Bouhairie and Michael Rosenthal. “It’s the same for any of the guys in the [PBC] stable. If you’re in this business to be great and make money, then we all have to fight each other. That’s just the bottom line. I’m in the business of giving fans great fights.”
