Canelo Alvarez Plans To Take His Time Returning From Wrist Surgery
Canelo Alvarez will take his time returning after needing wrist surgery following his one-sided decision win over Gennady Golovkin.
Alvarez says he has been dealing with the wrist issue since his fight against Caleb Plant and it has only gotten worse as of late.
“I had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight,” Alvarez said during a post-fight press conference. “So, [I said], ‘Ah, it’s OK. It’s OK. Let it [go]. Let it [go].’ And then training started, and it’s a problem, problem, problem. And I need surgery.”
With that, Alvarez says he will finally get the surgery he needs and won’t return until May or September.
“I’m gonna take my time,” Alvarez added. “My body needs [rest]. You know, last year I fought four times in 11 months. So, that is why. But I need to take my time a little bit. Maybe May, September, I don’t know. But take my time.”
According to Canelo Alvarez, the wrist flared up in the 12th round in his win over Golovkin and he is now tired of the pain and will get the surgery. The Mexican has also been known to box in May and September but that may not happen in 2023 as he rehabs this injury.
Although Alvarez will need surgery, he is coming off a lopsided win over Golovkin which ended their rivalry.
“I’ve gone through some very difficult things in my life, and the only thing you can do is to try and continue and move forward,” Alvarez said. “I’ve gone through difficult times with my defeats, and I’ve shown that defeats are great. It enables you to come back and show humility… “I’m just glad to share the ring with him. We’ve given the fans three really good fights. I’m glad to be involved in that kind of fights.”
