Gennady Golovkin Says Staying At 168lbs Or Going To 160lbs ‘Will All Depend On Offers That I Might Receive’

Gennady Golovkin has made it clear he will fight again, but is uncertain what weight class he will compete at.

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Golovkin suffered a clear-cut decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in their trilogy match. After the loss, many wondered if ‘GGG’ would retire but at the post-fight press conference he made it known he would fight again but remains uncertain if he will drop back down to 160lbs or stay at 168lbs.

“Well, it will all depend on offers that I might receive,” Golovkin said through his translator during his post-fight press conference. “At the same time, I have three belts at 160, like I just said, so I have certain obligations in connection with that.”

Golovkin currently owns the IBF, IBO and WBA middleweight titles and throughout his career he has fought at or near 160lbs, until he moved up to face Alvarez.

Even though Gennady Golovkin suffered a decision loss to Alvarez, he says he still has a fire burning and will fight again. Yet, he won’t be rushing back as he will be waiting for the right opportunity for him to return to the ring.

“Indeed, I still have this fire burning within me,” Golovkin said. “I have [more] passion for boxing. And don’t forget that I have three belts [at] 160. I feel good, like I said. I did not allow any serious shots [against Alvarez]. And I’m not tired. I’m fresh. I feel the strength. I feel the power within me. … If the right opportunity comes, I’ll be looking to continue to return [to] the ring.”

Prior to the loss to Alvarez, Golovkin was on a four-fight winning streak and was coming off a TKO win over Ryota Murata while also beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
