Deontay Wilder Says He Only Wants To Fight For Three More Years
Deontay Wilder ended up not retiring following his back-to-back losses to Tyson Fury but now says he only has three years left.
Wilder is set to return to the ring on October 15 against Robert Helenius in a crucial fight for ‘The Bronze Bomber’s’ career as with a win he is back in the title contention. Yet, at a press conference, Wilder confirmed he has only three years left as he wants to be done by he’s 40.
“I only wanna put in three more years, Ray,” Wilder told Premier Boxing Champions’ Ray Flores, who moderated the virtual press conference (h/t BoxingScene). “By the end of 40, we don’t have to be guessing about Deontay Wilder. We don’t have to assume. You hear it from the horse’s mouth now because, you know, a lot of media, they rather be first than being correct, especially when it pertains to me, you know? But you hear it right here from me. You know, I only wanna give it three more years, about till the end of 40, [before] turning 41. And then I wanna be done with it. I wanna pursue other things that I have set for myself and I wanna enjoy the rest of my life with my children, and build, build, build [on] this generational wealth.”
If Wilder defeats Helenius next Saturday, he will be back in the title picture but he has made it known he wants to fight Andy Ruiz Jr. next. He has also talked about wanting to fight Tyson Fury for the fourth time.
Deontay Wilder (42-2-1) is coming off back-to-back losses to Tyson Fury to lose his WBC heavyweight title. Before that, he knocked out Dominic Breazeale and Luis Ortiz after the draw against Fury. In his career, he also holds notable wins over Chris Arreola, Gerald Washington, Malik Scott.
