Gervonta Davis Admits He Was Surprised He Caught Hector Luis Garcia As Good As He Did
Gervonta Davis was surprised he hit Hector Luis Garcia as cleanly as he did.
Davis was headlining a pay-per-view fight in Baltimore on Saturday as he took on Hector Luis Garcia in a fight many called a tune-up. Davis was already booked to face Ryan Garcia in April but Davis made it clear he was not overlooking his opponent. Instead, he came out to fight and got a TKO stoppage in the ninth round after Garcia said he couldn’t see.
“I knew I caught him good, but I ain’t know I caught him like that, where as though he wasn’t gonna come out [to] the ring,” Davis said. “But I knew I caught him good… I came back to the corner and [it] was like that I knew I was about to knock him out, because I was touching him. I started touching him more.”
After a good shot at the end of the eighth round, Garcia decided to not come out as he said he couldn’t see and that even surprised Gervonta Davis’ trainer. They knew Davis could hit hard, but is shocked he hit him that hard.
“I was shocked,” Calvin Ford, Davis’ head trainer, said. “I didn’t know that he hit him that hard, to make him not wanna come out. You know, that’s the type of wins I like, when he’s putting it together and showing his real talents, that he really have.”
Following the loss, meanwhile, Garcia spoke and said he couldn’t see anything and didn’t know where he was after the big punch.
“When I got [hit with] the shot to my head in the final round, that’s when I couldn’t see from my eye,” Garcia said. “I didn’t know where I was when he hit me with that shot. My vision is back, but my head still hurts. I couldn’t see from my right eye. It was going well up until that point. I was picking my shots.”
