David Benavidez Claims Canelo Alvarez ‘Doesn’t Want To See Me’
David Benavidez believes Canelo Alvarez doesn’t want to fight him.
Benavidez is a perfect 26-0 and is one of the top contenders but after Alvarez defeated Gennady Golovkin in the trilogy, he dismissed Benavidez as a potential next opponent. For the 26-year-old Mexican, he doesn’t understand why.
“It just doesn’t really make any sense,” said Benavidez on The Last Stand with Brian Custer (via BoxingScene). “I been winning title eliminators, I just won an interim title. I feel like a lot of people now don’t respect the boxing ranks. If you don’t respect the boxing ranks, what are the boxing ranks for?”
Although Benavidez is a big name and an undefeated contender, the fight with Alvarez won’t happen this year. The Mexican already has his year set as he will likely face John Ryder in May and then the rematch with Dmitry Bivol. The Ryder fight is on many consider a tune-up which Benavidez thinks should be tougher fight but he understands as he think Alvarez doesn’t want to fight him.
“I’m the number one guy, I’m the mandatory. I think he’s just talking a lot of shit because he doesn’t want to see me. He knows I’m the biggest threat at 168,” Benavidez added.
As of right now, Benavidez does not have his next fight booked but it is clear he will not be fighting Canelo Alvarez anytime soon, at least in 2023.
Benavidez (26-0) last fought back in May with a third-round TKO win over David Lemieux. In his career, he holds notable wins over J’Leon Love, Ronald Gavril, twice, Anthony Dirrell, and Roamer Alexis Angulo among others.
