John Ryder Still Plans To Fight Following Loss To Canelo Alvarez
John Ryder will continue his boxing career.
Last weekend, Ryder suffered a one-sided decision loss to Canelo Alvarez for the Mexican’s titles. Ryder entered the fight with a ton of confidence but early on, Alvarez was having his way with him and dropped him in the fifth round.
Although Alvarez didn’t record another knockdown, it was a one-sided beatdown and Alvarez clearly won the fight. After the loss, the future of Ryder was uncertain, but he know says he will continue to box but knows he can’t have many fights like the one he did against Alvarez so he will pick the right matchups.
“For sure,” Ryder said in an interview with BBC 5 Live Boxing when asked if he expected to continue with his career (h/t BoxingScene). “I didn’t get the win, but I took a lot of credit from last night. But I will have a nice rest now. I will sit down when I get back with [trainer] Tony [Sims] and [manager] Charlie [Sims] and Eddie and see what the next [steps are]. But I definitely want to fight on. I can’t have too many more fights like that. I definitely want to have the right fights and keep going.”
Who exactly the right fights are is uncertain, but the good news for boxing fans is the fact that Ryder will continue to box.
John Ryder (32-6) entered the fight with Alvarez riding a four-fight win streak and had beaten Zach Parker to secure the title shot. In his career, Ryder is the former WBA interim super middleweight champion and WBA international middleweight champion and holds notable wins over Daniel Jacobs, Robert Talarek, Sergey Khomitsky among others.
