Canelo’s switch to the PBC could help extend his career and protect his boxing legacy

Canelo Alvarez has for several years been tied down to Matchroom Boxing when it comes to his promotional allegiances. However, in October he will fight for the first time backed by a fresh promotion – Premier Boxing Champions.

The Mexican has undoubtedly shown a visual decline in his abilities over recent years, but he is still one of the biggest names in the world of boxing. For the PBC, who have fewer elite names contracted compared to Matchroom, Canelo could benefit from an increased focus on himself. 

While contracted to Matchroom, Canelo was one of several huge names fighting for the promotion, but for the PBC, he is by far the biggest brand on display. 

PBC deal is beneficial for Canelo’s longevity

Canelo’s first fight for the PBC is against Jermell Charlo, who will have been inactive for 17 months come fight night. The matchup should represent a routine victory for the Mexican. In Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo betting, the former is a -400 favorite to make a successful start to life in the PBC. 

A typical Canelo knockout victory is also seen to be fairly likely. In boxing betting, he is offered at +275 to earn victory via knockout. He has recorded an early stoppage rate of 66.1% throughout his career so far, and he could well improve that in what is a mismatch in October.

The PBC does not tend to organize huge competitive fights for its biggest assets. Canelo’s status will be maintained while working on the new promotion, he will generally face less risky bouts than he would have done for Matchroom.

Dissimilarly to its competitor, Matchroom often looks to set up the biggest and most exciting fights. Fights of that type of course pose a much larger risk to a fighter’s status and long-term boxing career as a result. 

The Jermell Charlo matchup offers a hint as to how Canelo’s time with the PBC could go. He should face a succession of fights that he should realistically win. This should allow him to enter the ring many times in the next few years, which will net him a lucrative income total. 

The Mexican will avoid the biggest fights in the boxing world. Some would argue this could tarnish his reputation, but he of course avoids the risk of suffering a damaging defeat against a fellow superstar. 

Ultimately, Canelo is far beyond his peak abilities in the ring. In joining the PBC, he can comfortably extend his career, without being exposed to the sharper upcoming talents who are managed by the Matchroom promotion. 

Canelo’s legacy is written

The Mexican’s legacy in the sport is cemented, and it will likely not be impacted by future shortcomings, as the PBC should set him up with comfortable bouts to close out his career.

Canelo once knocked out Amir Khan and lost narrowly against the great Floyd Mayweather Jr. He is one of the elite boxers of his generation, and his recent switch of promotion should protect his legacy. 

He has only lost two fights out of 63 bouts throughout his career. That small tally of defeats could well be set to stay the same throughout the remainder of Canelo’s boxing career.
