Devin Haney Believes He Should Be Fighter Of The Year
Devin Haney thinks he cemented himself as the fighter of the year on Saturday.
Haney became WBC super lightweight champion with a dominant decision win over Regis Prograis. It was a one-sided fight and was a much more clear outcome than his fight against Vasyl Lomachenko.
However, with Haney being 2-0 in 2023, with wins over Prograis and Lomchenko, he believes that should be enough for him to be the Fighter of the Year and his dad to be the Trainer of the Year.
“I feel like I’m, you know, at this point that I should be ‘Fighter of the Year,’ ” Devin Haney said. “But also, not only that, but not only that, you know, they don’t wanna give my dad credit. But I think my dad deserve credit, ‘Trainer of the Year.’ You know, when they mention the best trainers in boxing, I don’t understand because they never mention my dad.
“But he is the best trainer in boxing, and it showed. Look at – we just went in there, went up in weight, you know, fought arguably the best at 140 and pitched a shutout, didn’t even get hit with nothing, handicapped him. Come on, now, my dad deserve ‘Trainer of the Year’ and I deserve ‘Fighter of the Year.’”
As of right now, Devin Haney does have a good case to be the Fighter of the Year. However, Terence Crawford, David Benavidez, and Naoya Inoue are all in the running for the award.
With the win over Regis Prograis, Devin Haney is now 31-0 as a pro and is the WBC super lightweight champion. Haney had vacated his lightweight titles as he was the undisputed champion after beating George Kambosos Jr., and defended the belt twice with wins over Kambosos Jr. and Lomachenko.
