Dick Tiger(Nigeria)
Boxing legend Richard “Dick Tiger” Ihetu is easily one of the best boxers from Africa ever. During Tiger’s fighting career, he was able to hold multiple world titles in different weight classes.
The Ugandan legend had a rough start to his career, but evolved into a world champion. At 45-14-2, Dick was able to beat Gene Fullmer to become the undisputed middleweight champion.
After his reign as middleweight champion ended, Dick went up to light heavyweight to challenge for the light heavyweight championship. Dick made history by beating Jose Torres to become a 2x undisputed champion in two weight classes.
John Mugabi(Uganda)
John Mugabi is a must on any list of the best boxers from Africa. The Ugandan native fought in the golden era of welterweight and middleweight boxers during the 1980s.
Mugabi was known for his immense power and could take any opponent out at any time. The Ugandan champion fought in his first world title match against the legend Marvin Hagler.
After suffering back-to-back losses, Mugabi was able to bounce back and won the WBC super-welterweight title from Rene Jacquot. John’s most notable feat was his impressive streak of 25 straight knockout wins.
Azumah Nelson(Ghana)
One of the best boxers from Africa, who is revered as an icon in Ghana is the legend Azumah Nelson. The icon from Ghana first gained fame as an amateur by winning the All-Africa Games and Commonwealth Games in 1978.
When Nelson turned pro, the expectations for his success were high and he more than exceeded them. During the 1980s, Azumah was one of the top featherweight and super-featherweight fighters in the world.
He held the WBC featherweight title for three years from 1984 to 1987. Nelson then moved up to super featherweight where he won the WBC super-featherweight title twice in 10 years.
To this day, Azumah is still the most successful champion to come from Ghana.
Brian Mitchell(South Africa)
Brian Mitchell is arguably one of South Africa’s best fighters and on the list of best boxers from Africa. During the 1980s, the Johannesburg native reigned as super-featherweight champion multiple times.
During Mitchell’s fourteen year career, he became a 3x super-featherweight world champion. He first won the WBA and The Ring world titles in 1986 after stopping Alfredo Layne in the 10th round.
Brian retained those titles throughout the rest of his career, while also adding the IBF super-featherweight title before retiring as champion.
Ike Quartey(Ghana)
The last great fighter that we’ll spotlight on our list of the best boxers from Africa is Ike Quartey. Ike followed in the footsteps of his fellow countryman Azumah Nelson and became a world boxing champion.
In 1994, Quartey won the WBA welterweight title by stopping Crisanto Espana in the 11th-round. Quartey would hold onto his title for the next four years and defend it an impressive seven times. Ike retired in 2006 with a record of 31-4-1
