Shakur Stevenson vs. Artem Harutyunyan Betting Preview
One of boxing’s biggest rising stars returns to action this weekend.
Shakur Stevenson will put his recently acquired WBC lightweight title on the line against Armenian-born German fighter Artem Harutyunyan at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night.
The 27-year-old American will want to make a statement as an overwhelming favorite in front of his hometown fans before moving on to bigger bouts.
Join BoxingDaily as we break down both men’s careers and the boxing odds before offering you an official prediction of how Stevenson vs. Harutyunyan will play out.
Shakur Stevenson
Stevenson is unsurprisingly a massive -1800 favorite to get the job done.
The 21-0 boxer has already won world titles in three different weight classes, and he has picked up several wins over fighters who would also be heavy favorites to beat Harutyunyan.
Jamal Herring, Oscar Valdez, Robson Conceição, and Edwin De Los Santos are just some of the top tier boxers who have fallen short against the slick southpaw.
Stevenson is a master boxer, but he has 11 knockouts on his record and will almost certainly be looking to take out Harutyunyan inside the 12-round distance.
If you decide to back the stoppage, your odds greatly improve to +110, while the oddsmakers think Stevenson needing the judges is equally as likely.
To make any money betting on Stevenson, you’re going to have to pick his method of victory in order to make your winnings worthwhile.
Thankfully, he has indicated how he will try to get the victory.“I think I’m one of the best in the sport of boxing at hit and don’t get hit,” Stevenson said at the final pre-fight press conference.
“There’s a certain way of doing that, and I want to show the fans that all that moving around is something I don’t really have to do.
“I can sit in the pocket and beat you up, too.”
Artem Harutyunyan
Harutyunyan is a huge +1400 underdog to beat Stevenson this weekend.
The 33-year-old represented Germany at the 2016 Olympics and won a bronze medal before turning pro and amassing a perfect 12-0 record.
However, the first time he stepped up his level of opposition he lost against Frank Martin, who outpointed him over 36 minutes in July 2023.
Unfortunately for Harutyunyan, Stevenson is one or two levels above Martin, and will almost certainly prove it when they meet in the ring.
If you fancy an upset, bookmakers are offering +5000 on Harutyunyan getting it done on the judges’ scorecards, and +4000 for him to KO Stevenson.
Stranger things have happened in boxing and there’s money to be made if he does the unthinkable by becoming the first man to beat Stevenson – but he doesn’t seem overly confident about it.
“I’m happy to be here in Newark,” Harutyunyan recently said.
“I was born in Armenia and live in Germany and I came all the way up here to fight Shakur Stevenson’s hometown.
“It’s a big opportunity for me, and I will do my best and show a great fight.”
Official prediction
For us, an upset just isn’t on the cards in Stevenson vs Harutyunyan.
A straight bet on the pound-for-pound star to win by any means is probably the safest option, but it would also mean putting a lot of money down as the odds are so short.
If you’re not willing to do that – we certainly aren’t – it then becomes about deciding if Stevenson will be able to take out his opponent.
Ultimately, we think there’s a vast difference in the levels of Stevenson and Harutyunyan.
Although he’s not a puncher, we expect the favorite to get this done in ruthless fashion. Stevenson by KO at +110 is our official pick.
