Rocky Legends
Released in 2004 on Xbox and Playstation, Rocky Legends let boxing fans fight it out using their favorite boxing movie characters. Players could choose from such characters as Rocky, Creed, and Clubber Yang, fighting it out to see who was the best movie boxer of all time.
The game also offered numerous different game modes such as career where you play out each character’s best moments, multiplayer where you play against friends to see who came out on top, and instant action where you drop into the ring and just play for fun. For fans of the movies, this was a true classic.
Wii Sports
A much more family-orientated one than the previous listing, however probably the most well-known boxing game around the world. When the Nintendo Wii was released and a copy of Wii Sports also came with it, it took the world by storm. The game featured numerous other sports such as tennis, golf, and even bowling, however, one of the most popular games was the boxing mode.
Players could create their own Wii character to look like themself, put them in the game, and fight other players. You could either play online against other players, against friends and family locally, or against the computer, moving up the ranks with each opponent getting stronger and stronger.
One of the most sold copies of a game of all time, Wii Sports is a true gaming classic and offers a completely alternative view on boxing games.
Mike Tyson’s Punch out
Probably the people all-time favorite boxing game on this list, but Mike Tyson’s Punch Out is one of the best boxing games of all time. Not only this, it was also considered one of the most difficult games of its time, and still probably is. It took players numerous attempts to beat the game due to its high difficulty, however, despite this, it was still loved by not only the boxing community but also just gaming fans in general. Released in arcades and later ported to the NES in 1987, this classic still holds up today and is still played by retro fans all over the world.
Fight Night Champion
Released in 2011 for Playstation, Xbox, and iOS, Fight Night Champion was well ahead of its time. For 2011, the graphics still hold up to this day 13 years later which is a real testament to how good the game looked. The game follows a fictional character named Andre Bishop, as you go through the boxing ranks hoping to make it all the way to the top.
With realistic animations, it makes it a must-play for any boxing fan as sadly this is one of the more recent boxing games released. Despite this, the game is still very much playable today and if you’ve not given it a go, it’s definitely worth picking up and playing if you can find a copy as it’s no longer available to digitally download.
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
A different take on boxing compared to the other games on this list, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing didn’t actually have any real-life boxers and only featured real-life celebrities to play with and box with. Released in 2000 on the PlayStation, N64, Dreamcast, and Gameboy, it allowed non-boxing fans a way into that world as they were able to play with some of their favorite celebrities.
Boxing has always been a much-loved sport and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Despite this, the number of boxing games has slowed down in recent years, however luckily for us, there is a whole roster of classic games for us to play.
