Chris Colbert Plans World Title Run At 130lbs

Chris Colbert says he plans to drop down in weight to 130lbs where he believes he can become a world champion.

Colbert is set to box Omar Salcido Gamez in his first fight since his KO loss to Jose Valenzuela in the rematch after he won the first fight by decision. The American will drop down to lightweight for the bout and he is eager for the bout as he believes he will prove himself to be a title contender at 130lbs.

“I was supposed to have been a world champion if I could afford the guy I was supposed to fight and then take a last-minute replacement, but it’s life,” Colbert told BoxingScene. “Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes in life, they say when you want something, God might not give it to you because you might not know how to handle it when he gives it to you. He’s gonna give it to you when he’s ready and this is just a part of it. I’m not complaining. I’m going down in weight to 130 to challenge for honors there.”

Ultimately, Colbert says dropping down to 130lbs is too tough right now, which is why he’s fighting at 135lbs on October 9. But, the goal for the American is to go down to 130lbs after the bout.

“I’ve been off the ring for too long and I can’t jump back down just a bit to 130,” he said. “I will be fighting at 135 on October 9 but will surely move down.”

Chris Colbert is 17-2 as a pro and before the back-to-back fights against Jose Valenzuela, he suffered a decision loss to Hector Garcia. Before that, the American began his career 16-0 and had notable wins over Miguel Beltran Jr., Jezreel Corrales, and Tugstsogt Nyambayar among others.
