Oleksandr Usyk defeats Tyson Fury in blockbuster rematch
Last night in Saudi Arabia, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury via unanimous decision in their heavyweight boxing rematch to confirm his status as one of the best fighters of his generation.
All three judges saw the contest the same way, giving Oleksandr Usyk the win 116-112 on all three scorecards. Fury certainly started the better of the two, but as the contest went on, the champion was able to slowly work his way into the fight – and eventually, he seized control of the narrative.
It was a competitive, interesting affair and a lot of the rounds were pretty close to score from beginning to end. With that being said, it certainly felt as if the right man won when it was all said and done.
Oleksandr Usyk proves himself once again
If there were any doubts before about Oleksandr Usyk and his historic standing within the context of the heavyweight division, all of that should be gone now. He just went out there and put on a show for the second straight fight against Tyson Fury, and even at the age of 37, he just seems to be going from strength to strength.
It’s not clear as to what’s next for him but based on what happened after the fight, Daniel Dubois is hungry to get another crack at the champion. Of course, in order to get to that point, he first needs to get through Joseph Parker in February.
As for Tyson Fury, the future is uncertain. In terms of major money fights, the one that makes the most sense – at least on the face of it – is Fury vs Anthony Joshua. They’re both 0-2 against Oleksandr Usyk which may make it a tougher proposition, but that contest will still sell out Wembley Stadium with absolute ease, and that much is obvious.
