Gervonta Davis survives in controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach

Gervonta Davis, Lamont Roach

Gervonta Davis somehow managed to survive against Lamont Roach, retaining his WBA lightweight title in the process.

Last night, Gervonta Davis went head to head with Lamont Roach in a blockbuster encounter at the Barclays Center in New York. It was a pretty tense, intriguing contest through the majority of the twelve rounds and when the final scorecards were read, it was deemed to be a majority draw. While some saw that as the right result, there are more than a few questions lingering in the air about why exactly Roach wasn’t awarded a knockdown in the ninth round.

Following an exchange, Gervonta Davis opted to take a knee. As is the case in 99% of boxing fights, that should’ve been ruled as a knockdown – and if that had happened, we’d be sat here talking about how Lamont Roach is the first person to ever defeat Davis in a professional boxing fight. However, that didn’t happen, and the conspiracy theories have since begun.

Gervonta Davis gets lucky

For the longest time, Lamont Roach has been trying to tell people that he matches up well with elite fighters – and Davis has been towards the top of the list throughout. He proved that he more than belongs in there with the best of the best and yet, instead of having his moment in the sunshine, he was quite frankly robbed by a decision made via the referee.

It’s really hard to wrap our heads around the exact reason but the bottom line is this: Gervonta Davis should have a ‘1’ in his loss column right now. Sure, the Stevenson fight is something that’s probably still in his future, but if there’s any integrity left in boxing, there should either be an appeal launched or Davis should be forced to give Roach a rematch. It’s that simple.
