Adrien Broner: What Do I Get Out Of Knocking Out Devin Haney?
Adrien Broner remains uninterested in a fight with WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.
The 21-year-old has quickly become recognised as one of the best 135lb fighters in boxing but Broner doesn’t believe he has anything to gain from beating the young starlet.
“I don’t need a Devin Haney,” Broner said on the latest episode of Brian Custer’s podcast, The Last Stand. “Devin Haney need Adrien Broner. I don’t need a Devin Haney. I don’t need no Devin Haney. What do that – let’s be honest, what do I get out of knocking out Devin Haney? Nothing. Everybody gonna be like, ‘Hey, he was supposed to do that. He’s bigger, faster, stronger. He just did what he was supposed to do.’ I’ve got everything to lose against a Devin Haney. I got nothing to win from that.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
Broner hasn’t fought since losing to Manny Pacquiao on a Showtime pay-per-view in January 2019. ‘AB’ put in a disappointing performance losing the fight clearly over 12 rounds. The outspoken fighter frustrated fans further by claiming that he was robbed by the judges despite being clearly outclassed by Pacquiao on the night.
The Showtime sports and event programming boss Stephen Espinoza recently told Boxing Scene that the plan was for Broner to return to the ring in January 2021 against “someone credible”.
“We’re in the process of talking about opponents,” Espinoza said. “It’s been two years since he’s fought, so we’re in discussions about the opponent. But it will be somebody credible.”
Broner has recently been talking up a fight against Ivan Redkach who was last seen in action against former two-weight world champion Danny Garcia. Redkach lost a unanimous decision in that fight but has since been calling out ‘AB’ who is more than happy to make the bout.
“Man, I would love to go in there and stop him. It’d be a good fight. You know, especially me coming off, I’ve been off for what, two years? I don’t care if we fight. I mean, as long as my money right, we gonna have a hell of a fight. I’m gonna f–k him up, though. He asking for it. He been begging for it.”
