Amir Khan Not Retiring But Kell Brook Rematch Unlikely
Amir Khan will not be retiring but a rematch against Kell Brook is unlikely at this time.
Khan and Brook had their highly-anticipated fight back in February where Brook won by sixth-round TKO. After the loss, many thought Khan would retire but shortly thereafter, there has been talks of him triggering the rematch clause despite the fact both men said it wouldn’t be needed after the event.
However, now it appears Khan will fight again but the rematch against Brook doesn’t seem like it will happen next as promoter Ben Shalom confirmed the news.
“One thing I’ve realised is that he’s not gonna stop fighting, whether I give him the rematch or not,” Shalom told the talkSPORT Boxing YouTube channel. “That’s up to him, he’s a fighter, he knows what happened in that fight better than any of us. He won’t stop, I’m convinced from hearing what the camp are saying, from hearing what he’s saying, he wants to continue. He feels like he got perhaps his camp wrong. That’s up to him. I don’t think the rematch is viable right now, but he wants to continue.”
Shalom, who helped promote Khan-Brook, was then asked what happens if Amir Khan triggers the rematch clause. However, the promoter doesn’t think that will happen.
“Look, it has to work commercially. People might think, ‘Oh, Ben’s in trouble here.’ Honestly, we’re alright. It has to work commercially. It has to work,” Shalom said about Khan-Brook 2. “It’s a split as well. It’s up to him, but also Kell and Sky have to agree. Look, we’ll see, he’s got a couple of weeks to decide what he wants to do. It’s up to him at the end of the day, but I don’t think it’ll be the rematch.”
