Andre Ward Criticizes Gennady Golovkin Over Canelo Alvarez Performance, Says GGG ‘Literally Just Showed Up To Get A Check’
Andre Ward doesn’t think Gennady Golovkin was trying to win in the trilogy fight against Canelo Alvarez.
In the first two fights, many thought Golovkin won both but on the official record, it was a draw and a loss for GGG. In the trilogy, he vowed to not let it hit the scorecards but Golovkin didn’t as he didn’t throw much and Alvarez cruised to a decision.
It was a disappointing performance and Ward has criticized Golovkin for his performance.
“I thought Alvarez should have stopped that version of Golovkin,” Ward said on Max on Boxing (h/t BoxingScene). “If Canelo is who he says he is, an all-time great, you got to take advantage of a fighter like that, who literally just showed up to get a check. The performance from Canelo was a little shocking. I thought he would do a little bit more, but the performance from Golovkin was not shocking. I was shocked by the reaction and the response that people finally got the revelation that he’s looking old.
“He’s looked old for the last two to three years, and because he’s got the mantra of Mexican style, everybody excuses the fact that he takes way too many punches and way too much punishment. The response time and reaction weren’t there. [Golovkin] has looked 40 for some time,” Ward continued.
It shouldn’t be a surprise though to see Andre Ward take shots at Gennady Golovkin. The two were linked to a fight in 2017 and recently Ward revealed GGG turned the fight down in five minutes which Golovkin says is not the case.
Ward retired with a record of 32-0 and ended his career with back-to-back wins over Sergey Kovalev. The American held multiple world titles in two weight classes, including the unified WBA (Super), WBC, Ring magazine, and lineal super middleweight titles as well as the unified WBA (Undisputed), IBF, WBO, and Ring light heavyweight titles.
