Andy Ruiz Admits He Was Overconfident Against Chris Arreola
Andy Ruiz has admitted he was overconfident before getting dropped by Chris Arreola in the second round of their fight which took place this past weekend and aired on FOX pay-per-view.
The only Mexican heavyweight champion in boxing history returned to the ring on Saturday night for the first time since losing his IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO titles to Anthony Joshua in December 2019. Ruiz had scored a huge upset victory to dethrone the Olympic gold medallist earlier that year.
Ahead of his return bout, Ruiz talked up his opponent who he rates as one of the top five heavyweights in boxing.
“He’s a Mexican heavyweight just like me,” Ruiz said pre-fight. “He don’t give up. Me and him are bangers and we like to give the crowd what they want.”
Despite talking up his opponent, Ruiz admits to being overconfident come fight night. The former champ survived an early knockdown to pick up a unanimous decision victory.
“Chris is a veteran and a hard puncher,” Ruiz said. “We did what we had to do tonight. We got the victory that we wanted. I was at my lowest point and now I have to climb the ladder again. I’m thankful for the victory and I’m ready to move on to the next.”
“He got me with a good clean right hand in the second round,” Ruiz added. “I was too overconfident and dropped my hand a bit. Hats off to him. We just kept pushing and pushing. I switched up and started focusing on counterpunching and working the body.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)
Ruiz now moves on to bigger things. The Mexican could well face off against former WBC champion, Deontay Wilder, in his next fight. Ruiz has also expressed some interested in squaring off against Luis Ortiz.
