Andy Ruiz Jr. Drops Luis Ortiz Three Times, Wins Unanimous Decision
Andy Ruiz Jr. dropped Luis Ortiz three times en route to a unanimous decision on Sunday night.
The fight was competitive but the knockdowns proved to be the difference as Zachary Young and Eddie Hernandez both scored it 114-111 while Fernando Villareal had it 113-112, all in favor of Ruiz Jr. who dropped Ortiz twice in the second and once in the seventh to get the nod.
“It was hard,” Ruiz Jr. admitted to Fox Sports’ Heidi Androl of facing his first career southpaw. “Ortiz is a warrior who hits hard. I did a beautiful job boxing him around. I showed more class than I usually do just coming forward.”
Throughout the fight, Andy Ruiz Jr. showed off his boxing skills as he used his jab to piece up Ortiz for the majority of the fight. The Cuban struggled to get through the jab but when he did he landed some solid shots that helped him win some rounds.
As Ortiz continued to try and work through the jab, his trainer German Caicedo begged the Cuban to stop just looking for the right hand and be more active to get the win. However, he still didn’t throw enough and Ruiz Jr. landed some solid shots, including landing one that swelled Ortiz’s left eye and seemingly won him the fight.
With the victory, Andy Ruiz Jr. is back in title contention and he says he doesn’t want a long layoff and hopes to fight again very soon.
“I do not want to be waiting so long to fight,” said Ruiz, who was out of the ring since a 12-round win over Chris Arreola last May 1 in Carson, California. “I want to fight at least three, four times a year, man. I want to be champion again and bring that belt back to Mexico!”
