Andy Ruiz Jr. Invites David Benavidez To Heavyweight Division If Canelo Alvarez Fight Doesn’t Happen
Andy Ruiz Jr. would like to see David Benavidez box at heavyweight if he doesn’t get the Canelo Alvarez fight.
Benavidez has been campaigning to get the Alvarez fight, but the Mexican hasn’t shown much interest in the bout. If the fight doesn’t happen, Ruiz Jr. says he would like to see Benavidez move up to heavyweight as he thinks the undefeated boxer could have success at the weight class.
“I think David [Benavidez] can do anything because he’s big, he’s strong,” Ruiz told FightHub TV about the 27-year-old (via BoxingScene). “I mean it was his first time fighting at [light-heavyweight] in his last fight, but it just takes time, he’s super young. If he does go to heavyweight hopefully, he gives me the opportunity to fight. He can [move up to heavyweight]. If he’s walking around, he is probably like 200 pounds anyway. I’m pretty sure he feels strong, but he’s a really talented kid.”
Andy Ruiz Jr. is set to return to the ring on August 3 against Jarrell Miller in his first fight in 23 months and in his return, the former champ is eager to return and continue to build his legacy.
“I’m really happy to be back,” Ruiz said. “I know it’s been a long minute, but things happen for a reason, and we’re out here now. I’m super excited to continue my mission and continue my path. I have to continue my legacy. I made history against Joshua. I made mistakes. I learned through the ups and downs and rollercoaster of life. I feel like it’s a redemption right now too. I am super motivated and hyped. The most important thing is that I am hungry. I am hungry for success and to become a two-time heavyweight champion.”
Ruiz Jr. is coming off a decision win over Luis Ortiz and before that, he scored a decision win over Chris Arreola to return to the win column after a loss to Anthony Joshua.
