Andy Ruiz Jr vs. Deontay Wilder In The Works For Late 2021
According to recent reports, Heavyweight standouts Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr will potentially headline a PPV event towards the end of the current year (H/T WBN).
Both fighters are among the elite of their weight class, but are currently both coming off losses. Wilder came up short against Tyson Fury, whilst Ruiz was unable to replicate his initial win over Anthony Joshua.
Ruiz currently looks set to face off against Chris Arreola in April, with the official date not yet announced. Wilder does not yet have a fight booked for 2021. However, links to Charles Martin and Robert Helenius have been gaining traction. Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn has gone so far as to state that Martin has a good chance at beating Wilder.
Should Ruiz and Wilder both pick up early wins in 2021, a title eliminator fight between the two could well be on the cards. With both heavyweights ranked within the top 10 for WBO, at very least a number 1. contender fight seems likely. However, very much could change with the WBO landscape in the coming months. Joe Joyce is coming off an impressive finish over Daniel Dubois, whilst Oleksandr Usyk‘s unanimous decision victory against Dereck Chisora forces his name into the hat.
However, the name value of both Ruiz and Wilder could be enough to propel them to the top. Both fighters are no doubt looking to complete their trilogies with Fury and Joshua respectively.
