Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk 2 Expected To Happen In February Or March In The UK, Says Eddie Hearn
Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will be running it back in the first quarter of 2022, promoter, Eddie Hearn revealed.
On Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd in England, Usyk stunned the crowd as he outboxed Joshua to earn a clear-cut decision to win the IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO. Although Usyk clearly won the fight, Joshua does have a rematch clause in his contract and for Hearn, he says they plan to exercise it.
“I don’t know – February, March,” Hearn said after the fight (Boxingscene.com). “I mean, I’d like to do it in the UK again. But again, we’ll sit down with Alex Krassyuk and talk about [it]. You know, there’s already been a few people on that are interested in staging the rematch. I’d like to do it in the UK. I think, obviously, that would be a benefit to AJ. I thought the atmosphere tonight was unbelievable. But again, you know, we’ll sit down with Alex Krassyuk and Egis and see what makes most sense for both guys.”
Although Usyk is now the champion, the fight won’t take place in his home country in Ukraine. Instead, Hearn says it’s likely it will be in the UK or somewhere international but the plan is to have it in the UK.
“Very unlikely, I think,” Hearn replied when asked if Ukraine is an option for their rematch. “Ukraine’s not great in February. No, on a serious note, we will work together to maximize the revenue. Ukraine is very unlikely, to be honest. I think it’ll be international or it will be in the UK. But I would think it will be in the UK.”
Regardless of where it takes place, Joshua will have to make serious adjustments if he wants to beat Usyk and reclaim his heavyweight titles.
