Austin Williams Expects To Fight For World Titles After Hamzah Sheeraz
Austin Williams knows people are overlooking him but he plans to prove he is a future world champion on Saturday.
Williams is set to face Hamzah Sheeraz in Saudi Arabia on the 5 v 5 event. Heading into the fight, Frank Warren has so much confidence that he made Sheeraz his team captain, meaning if he wins, Warren’s team earns four points.
Although Williams is the underdog, he feels confident heading into the fight and he’s eager to stun Warren and the fans.
“I feel like I’m being very underestimated by these guys, and that’s OK. I’m actually looking at that as my superpower in this fight,” Williams said at today’s grand arrivals (h/t BoxingScene). “I’m happy that Frank has the faith in Hamzah that he has – that makes our fight a lot more valuable for the team, and I’m excited for that, to go and take those four points from Matchroom.”
This fight also serves as the final eliminator for WBC champion Carlos Adames who is set to face Terrell Gausha on June 15.
“One win away [from a world title fight],” said Williams. “I didn’t do boxing for popularity or money; I came in it for greatness, and to be one fight away from the middleweight championship of the world is everything. I’ve been a middleweight since the beginning, I’ve been disciplined to stay there, and for this to be right there on the horizon is a dream come true.”
Williams enters the bout with a record of 16-0 and is coming off a knockout win over Armel Mbumba-Yassa. He also holds a notable win over Steve Rolls, so Williams is ready to get another win and secure a title shot.
Williams is a +180 underdog to Sheeraz.
